Heavy rain begins on NSW coast

[In preparation]

A rain event that would produce extensive flood damage on the North Coast began in earnest today with torrential overnight rain in the Tweed and Brunswick River Valleys and increasingly heavy falls south down the coast to Sydney. The cause continues to be a strong infeed of moist northeasterlies from the Coral Sea into a broad surface trough over QLD and NSW. The moist air is being forced to rise and condense its moisture into rain by a combination of uplift over the Great Divide, instability caused by colder-than-normal air aloft, and convergence into an upper low that was situated over NE NSW this morning but retreated into SE QLD this afternoon.

A nearly continuous line of storms and rain extended from Brisbane to north of Cairns this afternoon. Weatherzone

Storms and rain embrace QLD east coast

Thunderstorms developed along the Great Divide in QLD around midday today in the moist unstable airmass east of a surface trough lying through the inland. These moved east during the afternoon giving falls as high as 50 to 100mm around Mackay and Gladstone.

In the Pioneer Valley inland from Mackay, hail was reported, nearly 5,000 homes lost power following lightning strikes and there were falls of 40 to 60mm and up to 96mm at Greenmount for the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday. Farther south there were falls of 50 to 100mm from Rockhampton south to Gladstone and Bundaberg. Gladstone recorded 67mm for the 24 hours, while top falls were 111mm at Mimdale and 106.4 at Makowata, both about halfway between Gladstone and Bundaberg..

Maximum temperature departures from average today. BoM

Record heat in WA

Hot northerlies produced a hot day across WA today, with top temperatures in the mid 40s in the north and between 12 and 18 above average across much of the southern inland. Muchison, Meekatharra, Salmon Gums and Yeelirrie all reported record highs for October, with Meekatharra's 40.6 its highest October temperature in 54 years of record. Most stations in the Pilbara and Gascoyne reported maxima in the mid 40s, with Pannawonica reaching 45.0, Paraburdoo 44.2 and Nyang 43.5.

Sea fog shrouds WA coast

In an unusually widespread event, over 800km of WA coastline and the nearby inland were shrouded in sea fog this morning. The fog extended from Jurien Bay, 200km N of Perth, to Albany on the South Coast and extended several hundred kilometres out to sea. Some aircraft were prevented from landing at Perth Airport, and there were delays on the roads. The sea fog developed when cool, moist air on a light southerly breeze moved over the warm Leeuwin Current, currently averaging 18 to 19C near the coast.
